But will the management lessons be listened to or will the i-pods be used for entertainment?

Why couldn't they have been issued with a CD at considerably less cost?

I don't think the air will be any different for smokers, be they in a designated area or not. Clearly, the air quality will improve for those in restaurants and bars who don't smoke.

My issue for the environment is the visual impact of signs everywhere. Essentially a sign should denote something abnormal that I should be aware of. This applies as much to my work and leisure environment as on the road, etc.

I think the 'killing' has already been made by whoever got the contract for the sticky signs that came with the NHS pack!

I think there are some very good points made here. From the business point of view, our company have had to rush to ensure that all our signs are compliant in time for the ban. I think the idea of creating 'Smoking Area' signs is an excellent notion. Whether we will make a killing on the 'No Smoking' signs I'm not sure. Do you not think that the environment will be far worse for restricting smokers to designated areas??

Hi Andrew

I can see your logic. Unfortunately the Taxman's logic works in reverse. Thus, where you are saying that there is personal usage but it's not significant, and doen't cost any extra, the Taxman argues the same for the idea that the business use doesn't cost any extra, and it's the private calls that are in the tariff, so that none is claimable. This would be problematic with a company.

In your situation, you cannot claim that 100% of calls are business, and so I would recommend that you make an apportionment. The taxman will be suspicious of 100% business use with absolutely no personal use. But 95% business use is feasible and arguable.

I would be particularly wary of the VAT issues, as you must apportion for business use, no matter how little the private element is, if it exists, you must not reclaim VAT on it.

I'm a sole trader and my mobile phone bill has a monthly call plan that covers all of my call charges (both business and personal). As the phone is primarily for business and I do not incur any additional charges for personal calls, I claim the full cost of the line rental against my personal tax liability and I reclaim the full VAT rate. Do you think this sounds right, after all the personal calls are not costing any extra..?
